ACCOUNT BASED MARKETING

MOST ABM PROGRAMS ARE JUST SPAM WITH BETTER TARGETING DATA AND A FANCIER ACRONYM

Someone buys a list of “target accounts.” They upload it to an email platform. They write a message that says “Hi {First Name}, I noticed {Company Name} is doing interesting things in {Industry}. I’d love to set up 15 minutes to discuss how we can help.” They send it to 500 people. They get ignored by 498 of them. Then they write a LinkedIn post about how “ABM is a long game” and “pipeline takes time.”

This is not account-based marketing. This is cold email with a business case attached.

Real ABM starts with intelligence, not outreach. Before you send a single message, you need to know: which accounts are actually in-market right now? What signals indicate they’re ready to buy? Who on the buying committee needs to hear what message? And what’s the sequence that gets from awareness to conversation without burning the relationship?REJECTION IS DATA.

This is the thing most ABM practitioners miss entirely. When an account doesn’t respond, that tells you something useful if you’re paying attention. When they engage with one piece of content but not another, that’s a signal. When they visit your site after seeing an ad but don’t convert, that’s information. Most ABM programs throw the rejections in the trash and send another email. The ABM program that learns from every interaction, including the failures, is the one that compounds over time.

I build ABM systems that do all of this. Intent monitoring, IP-based targeting, programmatic email retargeting, direct mail triggers, and multi-channel orchestration. And because I’m also the creative director, every piece of content in the system is built to actually land, not just exist in someone’s inbox until they delete it.

HOW I BUILD ABM SYSTEMS

FOUNDATION: SIGNAL MONITORING

I don’t guess which accounts to target. I watch for buying signals: funding rounds, key hires, tech stack changes, competitor evaluations, content consumption patterns. These signals identify accounts entering the market before they raise their hand. By the time they fill out a form on your competitor’s site, you should already be in their inbox.

TARGETING: SURROUND SOUND

IP-based display ads served directly to the target company’s office. LinkedIn campaigns targeting the buying committee by role. Programmatic ads following individuals across the web after they engage with your content. The goal is omnipresence within the account: the decision-maker sees your brand in their feed, in their search results, in their inbox, and eventually on their desk.

ENGAGEMENT: PERSONALIZED AT THE ACCOUNT LEVEL

Not “Hi {First Name}.” Personalized to the account’s actual situation. Their industry challenges. Their competitive landscape. Their recent news. Their tech stack. AI makes this kind of personalization possible at scale. I generate account-specific messaging that sounds like it was written by someone who did an hour of research, because the AI did.

MEASUREMENT: PIPELINE, NOT VANITY

I don’t report on impressions served to target accounts. I report on meetings booked, pipeline created, and deals influenced. The whole point of ABM is that you’re spending more per account because each account is worth more. If the measurement doesn’t connect to revenue, the program is theater.

FREQUENTLY ANNOYING QUESTIONS

What is account-based marketing?

ABM targets specific high-value companies with personalized campaigns rather than casting a wide net. You identify your best-fit accounts, research their buying committees, and build marketing that speaks directly to their situation. It works because you spend money on accounts that can actually become customers, not on impressions that disappear.

What are examples of account-based marketing?

IP-targeted display ads served to a specific company’s office. Personalized direct mail triggered by a website visit. Email sequences tailored to a prospect’s role and industry. Custom microsites built for a single target account. Executive gifting timed to a funding announcement. I’ve done all of these.
