Private school marketing

YOUR OPEN HOUSE DOESN’T MATTER IF YOU WEREN’T ON THE SHORTLIST THEY MADE IN BED AT 11PM.Here’s what actually happens.

The families you need to reach are building their shortlist on their phones before they ever set foot on campus. If you’re not on that shortlist, the open house doesn’t matter. You can’t charm your way onto a list that was built in a browser.

I’ve done enrollment marketing for private K-12 schools and built an entire education marketing agency from scratch. The mechanics differ by school, but the principle is always the same: find the right families, say the right thing, at the right time, in the right place. And measure everything so you know what’s working and what’s just making you feel productive.

WHAT MOST SCHOOLS GET WRONG ABOUT ENROLLMENT MARKETING

They treat it like a campaign instead of a system. Enrollment isn’t a burst of advertising in March hoping to fill seats by August. It’s a year-long storytelling operation mapped to how families actually make decisions. At Village School, we proved the family consideration cycle is 21 days. That means you need to be present and consistent across those 21 days, not loud for one week and silent for the next three.

They market the school instead of marketing to the parent. Your campus is beautiful. Your teachers are dedicated. Your test scores are impressive. Every private school says this. The families who are choosing between you and three other schools can’t tell the difference because the brochures all sound identical. The schools that win enrollment market to the specific anxieties, aspirations, and decision criteria of the parent, not the features of the institution.

They underestimate the competition’s marketing. Public school is free. The other private schools in your market are spending money to reach the same families. Charter schools are growing. Homeschool co-ops are organized and vocal. If your marketing strategy is “word of mouth and an annual open house,” you’re bringing a reputation to a knife fight.

They can’t prove what’s working. Most school admissions offices have no idea which marketing channel produced which inquiry. Was it the Facebook ad? The Google search? The yard sign? The referral from another parent? If you can’t attribute inquiries to channels, you can’t optimize spend. You’re just spending and hoping.

WHAT I WISH EVERY HEAD OF SCHOOL KNEW

Enrollment is a Reach, Act, Convert, Engage cycle that runs twelve months. The inquiry you get in February was planted by a piece of content they saw in October. If you only market during “enrollment season,” you’re only harvesting. You never planted.

Geofencing isn’t creepy. It’s competitive intelligence. If a parent drove onto a competitor’s campus for a tour, they’re actively shopping. Showing them your ad on their phone within the hour isn’t stalking. It’s showing up at the exact moment they’re comparing options. We did this at Village School. Media-influenced visitors converted at 9.46% vs 5.29% organic.

Your website is your admissions office after hours. Most school websites are designed to impress accreditors, not convert parents. The parent visiting at 10pm on a Tuesday night after the kids are asleep needs to find answers fast: what makes this school different, what does it cost, and how do I schedule a tour. If those three things aren’t obvious within ten seconds, they’re gone.

AI search is changing how parents find schools. In 2026, parents are increasingly asking AI assistants to recommend schools. If your school hasn’t built topical authority through content that positions you as the obvious answer for your category and geography, you won’t appear in AI-driven recommendation results. This is the new SEO for education.
