Start With Why: The Question Most Brands Never Ask
Most businesses start with what they sell. Then they figure out how they sell it. The why never comes up, or it shows up on
The Minimum Viable Brand is a structured extraction process. Through a series of working sessions with you, the founder, we pull out the Why, the mission, the vision, the positioning, the personality, the values, and the audience definition. Then we assemble them into a document your whole team can use. No logo. No guesswork. No fluff. Just the foundation everything else has to be built on.
Most brand strategy engagements produce a deck nobody opens and a logo the founder already had opinions about. This isn’t that. The MVB is a working document: the structured output of a disciplined conversation between you and someone who has done this across 30 years and dozens of categories.
By the end, you have a brand foundation that answers every creative brief, onboards every new hire, and gives every agency or freelancer a reference point that doesn’t require a phone call with you to interpret.
The core belief that drives your business. Not what you sell. Why the world needs it from you specifically.
Who you're actually talking to. Built from data you already have, not invented from thin air.
The specific change you're committed to making for your audience. What you're for, and what that obligates you to do.
The future state your brand is building toward. Aspirational, specific, and long enough out to pull the business forward.
What you're doing right now in service of that vision. Present-tense work. Specific and measurable enough to hold you accountable.
The human characteristics your brand expresses consistently. How it sounds, what it would never say, and who it would be at a dinner party.
The defensible claim no competitor can make as credibly as you. Where you stand in the market and why it matters.
All seven elements assembled into a single visual framework that shows how they support each other. The document that makes the rest of this usable.
Think of it this way. I’m an executive chef coming into your kitchen. You already have the pots, the pans, the knives, the plates, and somewhere to sit.
You have all the ingredients. What you don’t have is a menu.
That’s what we’re building. Groceries, by the way, are extra.
The MVB does not include a logo, a visual identity system, a website, or a tagline. Those are downstream of the foundation. You can’t brief a designer without one, which is exactly the point: this is what makes every creative decision after it faster and cheaper.
It also does not include customer research. You need to bring data. Not a lot, but something: customer interviews, surveys, sales call notes, churn feedback, anything that tells us who is actually buying and why. If we’re working from nothing but founder intuition, we’re not building a brand foundation. We’re building a hypothesis. The MVB is designed to capture what you know and make it usable, not to invent what you don’t.
If you don’t have customer data yet, we should have a different conversation first.
WHAT YOUR NEED TO BRING:
Interviews, surveys, reviews, sales notes, NPS comments. It doesn't have to be a research report. It has to be real signal, not founder assumption.
This is an extraction process. The work happens in conversation. If you can't be in the room, we can't do the work.
Pre-revenue is fine. Pre-customer is not. There has to be something real to build from.
The whole point of this process is to surface what you haven't said out loud yet. That's not always comfortable.
Each session is structured to extract a specific layer of the brand. Between sessions, I synthesize, draft, and come back with something to react to. You’re not doing homework. You’re doing interviews.
We go deep on Why. Why this business, why you, why now, why anyone should care. We also map the audience: who they are based on your data, what they want, what they tell themselves about why they buy. This session is diagnostic. I ask, you answer, I push back where the answer is vague or borrowed from a competitor.
We draft purpose, vision, and mission from what came out of Session One. You react. We refine. We also define what the brand would never say, never do, and never be confused with. Personality emerges from constraints as much as aspirations.
The specific change you're committed to making for your audience. What you're for, and what that obligates you to do.
Every step of the Minimum Viable Brand is documented in an 11-part series. Read all of it. If it doesn’t make sense as something you need, this probably isn’t the right moment. If it does, you already understand what you’re buying.
