WHAT I DID

You were about to ask “What did you do?” So I made you a checklist.

OBJECTIVE

Increase awareness and utilization of free pediatric dental care and WIC nutrition programs among low-income families in a North Florida county.

CHALLENGE

The services were free. The clinic was staffed and ready. And the families who needed them most weren’t coming in. This wasn’t a pricing problem or an access problem in the traditional sense. It was an invisible wall built from distrust, unfamiliarity, and the daily friction of poverty. The target population had limited exposure to traditional healthcare marketing. Many were working multiple jobs, had no regular doctor, and had learned through experience that “free” usually comes with fine print, long waits, or judgment. The county health department had no unified brand for its dental clinic, no consistent visual presence in the community, and no outreach strategy designed to meet these families where they actually were. The services existed. The awareness didn’t.

INSIGHT

You can’t market public health services the way you market a product. There’s no impulse buy. There’s no FOMO. The barrier isn’t awareness in the traditional advertising sense. It’s trust. A low-income parent who has been burned by bureaucracy isn’t going to click a Facebook ad and book a dental appointment for their kid. They’re going to ask their neighbor, their church, their kid’s teacher. They’re going to notice the same logo on the bus they ride every day and start to feel like this is a real place, not a government abstraction. Grassroots public health marketing doesn’t work by reaching people. It works by becoming familiar enough that reaching out feels safe.

OPPORTUNITY

Build a brand identity and grassroots presence that makes the health department’s services feel local, visible, and trustworthy rather than institutional and distant. Use the channels this population actually encounters daily: transit, community events, schools, and neighborhood touchpoints. Create visual consistency so that every encounter reinforces the last, building the kind of slow-burn familiarity that eventually converts distrust into a booked appointment.

SOLUTION

Unified Clinic Brand Identity.

Developed a cohesive visual identity for the county dental clinic that could work across every touchpoint: signage, printed materials, bus posters, event banners, and community handouts. The goal was recognition. Every time a parent saw the brand, whether on a bus shelter or a flyer at their kid’s school, it built another layer of familiarity.

Transit Advertising.

Placed bus posters on routes serving the target neighborhoods, putting the clinic’s brand and services directly in front of families during their daily commute. Transit was chosen specifically because the target population was more likely to ride the bus than to scroll past a digital ad.

Community Outreach Events.

Organized and participated in local events where the target families already gathered: school functions, community fairs, neighborhood gatherings. Face-to-face contact with real staff from the clinic broke down the institutional barrier that no ad could overcome. People could ask questions, hear from other parents, and see that the clinic was run by humans, not a government form.

Standardized Communication Materials.

Created a unified design system for all printed and digital materials, ensuring that every piece of communication looked like it came from the same trusted source. In a population with lower health literacy, visual consistency isn’t a branding luxury. It’s a recognition tool that helps people connect the flyer on the fridge to the poster on the bus to the sign on the building.

RESULTS

  • 30% increase in booked appointments among target families
  • Established a recognizable, trusted brand for the county dental clinic in underserved communities
  • Built a grassroots outreach model that continued generating awareness beyond the initial campaign
  • Measurably improved healthcare access and utilization among the county’s most underserved population
