WHAT I DID

You were about to ask “What did you do?” So I made you a checklist.

OBJECTIVE

Build brand awareness and a qualified pipeline for a boutique NYC financial services firm competing against a massive, entrenched incumbent in a category where trust is everything and switching costs are high.

CHALLENGE

The firm specialized in SEC compliance and financial printing, a category where the buying decision is defined by a single emotion: fear. CFOs and Compliance Officers don’t switch vendors for a better price or a flashier brand. They switch when their current vendor makes a mistake that could cost them their career. The dominant competitor had decades of incumbency, and the target audience was conservative by nature, risk-intolerant by profession, and loyal by default. Nobody was looking to change. The firm needed to be the first name that came to mind on the day the incumbent finally dropped the ball.

INSIGHT

You can’t convince a risk-averse CFO to switch financial printers with a clever ad. That’s not how this category works. These buyers operate under extreme deadline pressure, where a missed SEC filing can trigger regulatory action. They’ll stay with a mediocre vendor for years rather than risk the unknown. But they do have moments of vulnerability: the week before a filing deadline when stress peaks, the quarterly cycle when they’re reviewing vendor performance, the conference where they’re quietly comparing notes with peers. The strategy wasn’t to sell. It was to be so consistently present, so obviously competent, and so useful at those exact moments that when the inevitable failure happened at the incumbent, the firm was already trusted before the first phone call.

OPPORTUNITY

Build a “surround sound” ABM campaign that creates persistent presence across every channel this audience touches, without the budget of the incumbent. Use high-intent content as the entry point (people actively searching for SEC compliance resources are self-qualifying), then layer micro-targeted display, direct mail, and event presence to stay visible across the entire buying cycle. Negotiate aggressively on media to stretch a boutique budget further than it should go. And build a compliant creative testing system that lets you iterate at speed despite heavy regulatory constraints.

SOLUTION

Brand Repositioning.

Reframed the firm’s positioning around reliability and personal service with the line “ABC: Always Be Compliant.” Shifted the brand voice from generic financial services speak to something that resonated with the specific anxieties of the audience: precision under pressure, human accountability, and zero margin for error.

High-Intent Content Engine.

Created educational assets including e-books and SEC filing calendars designed to capture leads at the exact moments prospects were thinking about compliance. These weren’t thought leadership for thought leadership’s sake. They were utility tools that put the firm’s name on the one document a CFO reaches for every quarter.

Surround Sound ABM.

Orchestrated a multi-channel campaign combining micro-targeted programmatic display, YouTube pre-roll, niche industry partnerships, direct mail, marketing automation sequences, and event sponsorships. Every channel reinforced the same message. The target never saw a single ad. They saw a firm that seemed to be everywhere.

Compliant Creative Testing System.

Built a bespoke testing framework using a library of pre-approved, compliant templates that allowed rapid, high-volume creative iteration within regulatory guardrails. Turned a constraint into a competitive advantage: the firm could test and optimize faster than competitors who were stuck waiting for legal review on every variation.

Media Negotiation and Optimization.

Negotiated up to 40% in added media value through partnerships and tracked performance across every source, creative, and landing page. Shifted budget away from splashy branding and into tightly measured channels where every dollar could be attributed.

Modular Team Integration.

Embedded a strategist, media buyer, and project manager into the firm’s lean internal structure, effectively giving a boutique firm enterprise-level marketing capability without enterprise overhead.

RESULTS

  • +250% increase in qualified leads from high-value accounts
  • +314% increase in media efficiency through precision targeting and negotiation
  • +128% lift in brand recognition in the target market
  • +64% higher social engagement than the dominant competitor
  • Built a repeatable, compliant creative testing system that continued scaling after the initial engagement
  • Established the firm as the credible alternative in a category where credibility is the only thing that matters
